Johnny Poindexter - One Of Three (E.P.)
This promotional EP consists of four tracks taken from the forthcoming album. The music is nigh on impossible to categorise. On the one hand, JP could be labelled as one of the 'new wave' of indie bands which can actually play real music and on the other, their inventiveness is sort of weird prog. Influences and individual tastes of the band members include Mogwai, Radiohead, and The Mars Volta, elements of which can be detected within the four tracks on show here. The instrumental aspect is nicely intricate and delicate, sometimes to the point of being 'trippy' or 'floaty', with interesting arrangements delving into a more voracious 'space rock' Hawkwind type of energy (We Meet By Accident). Gavin (guitars and principal songwriter), Nigel (bass, guitar), Simon (keyboards) whose first album purchase, incidentally, was Genesis Live, and Andy (drums) bring to life a lot of new ideas whilst accidentally or deliberately drawing on aspects of the music of others (Zeppelin feel vocals and Hackett style guitar on Madeline for example), but do it with a unique style. It will come as no surprise that the band produce their own CDs, innovation, inventiveness and talent being definite no nos as far as mainstream record companies are concerned, but one fictitious Norwich radio presenter, if asked to comment on Johnny Poindexter, would be sure to thrust his fist in the air and shout 'Jurassic Park' triumphantly.
