Jon Anderson - State Of Independence (Enhanced CD Single)

Jon Anderson - State Of Independence (Enhanced CD Single)The 11th July 2005 sees the UK and European release of legendary YES front man, Jon Anderson's, CD single State Of Independence and DVD Tour Of The Universe (sorry USA, you have to wait until 6th September for the DVD).

Delving straight in without a glance at the accompanying booklet, I experienced a 'de ja vu' on hearing the title track.  There is never any mistaking Jon's voice but that apart, the song seemed like a cross between YES and Jon And Vangelis.  Not that surprisingly as it happens.

State of Independence (perhaps you recall the Donna Summer version) appeared on the 1981 Jon And Vangelis album, The Friends Of Mr Cairo (and on The Best Of... from which the track I Hear You Now still haunts me, and that can also be found on the duo's Short Stories album.  But I digress...).  The simple accompaniment, which has an acoustic feel tinged with a happy hippy (trippy clappy?) element that is pure Jon, as is the young (children's) choir.  The 'enhanced' part of the CD includes a video version of the song featuring Jon with guitar in an electronic display on the side of a building in a city whilst the evening traffic, speeded up, creates a light show of sorts.

Maintaining the trademark Jon Anderson upbeat tendency is the not quite UB40 and not quite Bob Marley reggae style You Lift Me Up.  This is a previously unreleased song and one which grows on you given the chance.

I would imagine that most people in the western world at least will have heard the Ying Tong Song.  Final audio track on the CD is Jon's rendition of the song made famous by the favourites of HRH Prince Charles, The Goons, and takes one back to the days of the Light Programme before it became BBC Radio 1 and 2 (which, I hasten to say, I am almost too young to remember!).

As well as the video footage, the CD offers Jon Anderson wallpaper and screensaver for both PC and MAC.

A final mention about the Tour of The Universe DVD which is released at the same time as this CD.  The DVD includes a variety of YES and Jon And Vangelis songs as well as new songs, and was recorded live at XM Radio Studios in the USA. Jon also embarks on a European Tour in September and October 2005.
